Best file format for Cricut Design Space

What FILE Types are Supported in Cricut Design Space?

All those who have this weird obsession for crafting like me know that Cricut Design Space is gaining popularity in the craft world like fire spreading in the forest. The increased hype of design space has diverted many individuals towards the software. Being a newbie, you are curious and confused about a lot of things. We have all been there once! I have been dedicating my time to writing posts that would help you know your way around Cricut Design Space. So today, we are gonna be discussing about the best file format for cricut.

What file format does Cricut Use?

Even though Cricut uses the .svg files and it is also the easiest to work with, the design space software allows you to upload and convert .jpg, .png, .svg, and .dxf files into cuttable shapes, completely free of cost. It is important to identify the differences between these types of files and when one should use them in the design space. So let’s dig into that!

If you have never used CDS then i’d suggest you to check out this Beginner’s Tutorial on CDS 101. It would help you better understand why I’m emphasizing over choosing the right type of file for it. It doesn’t look like it’s gonna affect the final result as much. But once you have cut out your design and it’s ready to assemble, you’ll see how big of a difference it makes!

Now before we conclude which is the best file format for cricut, let’s just first go through each of them!

JPG or JPEG File

A jpg file has a high resolution which makes it ideal for printing photographs. If all you want to do is use the print and cut feature, using a JPG file is your best bet. However, avoid jpg files if you want to cut multiple layers of your image as it cannot differentiate between color layers which results in Cricut Design Space not being able to lay all the layers separately!

SVG File

SVG allows you to scale your image up and down infinite times without decreasing the quality even a little bit. Unlike a JPG file, you can separate your layers and distinguish between colors if the file format is SVG. So an SVG file should definitely be preferred when you want to further customize your design!

PNG File

If you are using design space to make stickers or vinyl decals, a png file is your best bet. Why? You may ask. So let me tell you.

  1. They have transparent backgrounds.
  2. You won’t have to get in the hassle of holding the design in one place when placing it digitally.
  3. Excellent for print and cut

So if you want a flat-file and avoid getting in the mess of having to cut separate lines, this is it for you to make the perfect stickers!

DXE File

A DXF file is the closest alternative to an SVG file if you are using Cricut design space. So just like SVG files, when you open up a DXF file on the Cricut Design Space you will have a ready-to-cut image. You can ungroup the elements and identify between the layers if you want to print and cut layered designs!

EPS File

EPS files are typically suitable for documents that require high resolution such as logos. So, I would never recommend using EPS file format while designing on Cricut since it works better on advanced softwares!

Well, in a nutshell, SVG format is so far the best file format for CDS if your design is complicated. You can also get plenty of SVG designs for free by clicking here. For a simpler image, the JPG file format works fine too. I believe as a beginner, this much knowledge is enough for any one of us to get an insight into different file formats and their purposes!

benefits of llc vs sole proprietor

Benefits of LLC vs Sole Proprietor

Benefits of Having an LLC vs Sole Proprietor as a Small Business!

As I’m always trying to find the topics that would help small business owners and flourish their businesses, I recently came across a social media debate on the benefits of LLC vs Sole Proprietor, which one of these is better for small business owners?

Going through people’s opinions on this, I concluded it’s super important that someone finally addresses every aspect of this debate and pretty obviously, that someone is gonna be me! So, this is what we are gonna talk about today: the benefits of LLC vs Sole Proprietor!

First off, let’s just get to know about both of these terms separately:

What is LLC?

The acronym LLC stands for Limited Liability Company. It is a business structure designed for small business owners to offer them protection and prevent them from being held personally responsible for debts or liabilities.

Business owners choose LLC as it offers them several advantages, such as:

1. Limited Amount of Paperwork

For businesses that are running on small-scale, excessive paperwork and never-ending formalities are a nightmare! LLC offers less paperwork as well as fewer formalities. For instance, if you have started an LLC, you do not have to attend annual shareholder meetings.

2. Flexible Management

With LLC, owners are entitled to make all their decisions by themselves unlike in a corporate structure where a board of directors is needed to supervise all the important decisions and company policies.

3. Offers Owner Protection

One of the major advantages of LLC is that it offers the separation of business assets from the personal assets of the owner. In the case of debts and liabilities, the personal assets of the owners are always out of risk. If you own cars, houses, etc, this is important!

There are some more advantages of LLC, all concluding to the fact that LLC is one of the simplest business structures. Therefore, it is highly suitable for small businesses.

Coming onto the next one:

What is a Sole Proprietor?

One of the simplest structures followed for a business is the sole proprietorship. As it is the easiest business structure, it is the most common choice for small business owners. In a sole proprietorship, the business is owned by a single individual and there is no distinction between the personal and business debts and liabilities. People go for sole proprietorship because of certain advantages that it offers such as:

1. Low Cost

Setting up a business is expensive enough already. Sole proprietorship is preferred by small business owners as it is inexpensive and the easiest as well as the quickest method to get your business running.

2. More Freedom

Since you are the only owner of your business, you are free to make all of your decisions. You don’t need to consult anyone or take anyone else’s opinions, you may do whatever you believe is in the best interest of your business.

3. Reduced Formalities

As the owner and the business are not viewed as distinct from each other, the formalities of running the business are greatly reduced.

Looking at the advantages of both LLC and Sole Proprietor surely makes sole proprietorship look more appealing due to its informality. But let’s compare both of them in detail to know more!

Is LLC better than Sole Proprietorship?

Some of the major differences between LLC and Sole Proprietorship are as follows:

  1. LLC is a formal legal process whereas sole proprietorship does not require any formalities and is easier to form.
  2. In an LLC, the ownership of your business is shared with the members of the LLC whereas you are the only owner of your business in a sole proprietorship.
  3. In case of the business being sued, your personal assets are always safe with an LLC. However, if you are the sole proprietor, your personal assets are just as much at risk as your company.
  4. The taxation process in LLC is kind of flexible which is not the case in a sole proprietorship. If you go with an LLC, you may end up with some tax savings.

All things considered, I personally feel that if you compare the benefits of llc vs sole proprietor, LLC is a better option than sole proprietorship for small-scale businesses. Even though it involves comparatively more formalities, it also has greater advantages and fewer drawbacks. That is why I applied for my LLC when I first started my business back in 2018 (yes – AMCX Studio is an LLC!). All in all, it was a fairly easy process and the yearly fees are minimal when it comes to the protection that I am afforded each year.

For more information, I would highly recommend that you check with your state requirements for your business. You can oftentimes find state funded business resource centers in your area with a quick google search. I hope this was enough to clear any doubts in your minds and get you thinking about setting your business in stone! Let me know what you prefer, LLC or Sole Proprietorship? fall doormats ideas

DIY Fall Doormats to Welcome Fall in Style

Super Cute DIY Fall Doormats to Welcome fall in Style

The drop in temperature outside always sends a wave of energy and excitement into me and leaves me wanting to be creative and do something (pun intended!). I have been super into DIY house décor these days so I have been searching for innovative ideas to change the look of my home and then it clicked to me, I can design my own fall doormats!

DIY doormats are inexpensive and easy to do, so I decided to have some fun myself this year and welcome fall with some super cute doormats. So in search of ideas, I checked over Design Bundles to find so many cute designs!

So for all the people out there who are obsessed with DIYs these days and want to welcome the fall season in full style this year, the following are the ideas for DIY fall doormats that I tried and you’re gonna love!

1. Fall Doormats with Quotes!

This doormat was one of the easiest and hassle-free ones to make as apart from a thing or two, I already had everything at my place! To design this, you will need the following things:

  • Your favorite fall quote’s template design
  • A cardboard paper
  • Scissors
  • Access to a printer
  • Permanent markers
  • Acrylic or spray paints
  • A plastic sheet (optional)
  • Paintbrush
  • And of course, a plain doormat (preferably black)

The process is pretty easy. All you need to do is print out your favorite fall quote’s template design on the cardboard paper and cut it out with the help of scissors. Ta-da, you just created your customized stencil!

Place this stencil on the doormat and hold it in position. This is a bit tricky part as you want to ensure the stencil is nicely in place as otherwise, your outline may look unfinished. Now it’s up to you if you want to use spray paints or acrylic ones, you can use whatever is available.

For spray paints, directly spray the paint on the stencil but if you are going with acrylics, use a permanent marker to make an outline first. Once the outline is made, you can remove the stencil and fill in the paint with the use of paintbrushes! Once done, leave it to dry for at least a day or until you are sure the paint has completely dried. You can place this on the main entryway as it would make the perfect fall front doormat!

Note: I spread out a plastic sheet before getting on with this, I suggest you do the same if you are not looking forward to a tile cleaning session afterward!

2. Fall Doormats with Leaves!

I loved how this one turned out. It’s super easy to make and requires almost the same stuff as the former one such as:

  •  Fall Leaves Design Template
  •  Cardboard Paper
  • Scissors
  •   Permanent Marker
  •  Paints and Brushes
  •   Plain Doormat

All you need to do for this one is print some fall leaves on the cardboard, place them on different positions on the mat and trace them out. Now fill them in with rustic colors and there you go! Super fun, quick, and easy to do!

I hope this blog inspired you to get into the DIY zone. Try out these fall doormat ideas and let me know how they turned out!

how to make vinyl decals

how to make vinyl decals with CRICUT maker?

DIY Crafting Tutorials: How to make vinyl decal with Cricut Maker

Vinyl decals are one the EASIEST circut crafts you can create. Whether you want to use it for informational purposes or to simply decorate your walls, they are suitable for both! So, following our pattern of learning new DIY techniques, today I’m gonna tell you all how to make vinyl decals. The way I do it is super quick and easy, you can follow that and get your vinyl decals in no time!

I make my vinyl decals using a Cricut machine and even though the process looks a bit complicated, trust me once you get the hang of it, you will never want to stop! So, here goes your guide:

How to Make Vinyl Decals with Cricut?

Okay, so I will be writing down the method that I follow step by step. Hopefully, you will get the perfect vinyl decal with these instructions!

STEP 1

I know this one is pretty obvious but I wanted to give you guys a perfect thorough guide! To get started, you need to find a design for the decal. You can head over to Pinterest for inspiration, peep the shop, or jump to Design Bundles and grab a freebie!

STEP 2

Once you have selected the design, go to the Cricut design space and start a new project. There you will see several options on a tab on the left-hand side of the screen. From here, click on the upload button and select your design from your device’s media.

I always use design space on my desktop as it gives me a better view of what I’m doing with my design plus I feel like it is easier to navigate on the desktop than on my mobile phone.

STEP 3

This step is one of the most important ones if you want to master how to make vinyl decals using Cricut maker art. After your design has been uploaded on the canvas, you must resize it.

Make sure you have an accurate idea of what size you want your vinyl decal to be and then change its size accordingly. Otherwise, it would either look too big or too small for the surface you are making it and all this is going to be worth nothing!

Note: I prefer to place my design on the top left or right of the canvas as if it is situated in the center, an entire vinyl sheet is wasted during its cutting process. Saving those extra pieces comes in handy when you have small designs to print.

STEP 4

You can always customize your design. Add text, elements, or pull pieces from other designs to give it a more personalized look. Once you are satisfied with how it looks, next comes the second most important step of how to make a vinyl decals!

STEP 5

Click on the “Make It” button to begin the next part of this process. Ensure that the design is exactly how you wanted it. Turn on your maker and make sure it’s connected to your device. Choose vinyl when it asks what material you are using.

STEP 6

Place the vinyl sheet on the mat in a way that the shiny side is facing up. Let all the air bubbles out by smoothing out the surface.

STEP 7

Follow the instructions displayed on your screen to place the mat accurately in the machine. Once done, press the logo button and the cutting will begin! This part always makes me super nervous especially when I use scrap pieces!

STEP 8

When the cutting is done, you have to press the eject button on the maker to release the mat from the maker. Carefully remove the mat from the sheet by peeling it and then cut the extra vinyl sheet around your sticker to avoid wasting it. You can not believe how many times a project was saved by having just enough scrap vinyl.

STEP 9

Pull out the negative space around your vinyl decal and then stick it on the transfer paper. Again, ensure there are no air bubbles otherwise the design will not shift on the transfer paper easily.

STEP 10

This brings to our final step!

Now place this where you want your decal to be. Smooth it out with your fingers, a blank credit card, or with the tools that come along with the Cricut Maker. Then carefully peel it off at a 45 degree angle and here it is, the perfect vinyl decal made by you!

Bonus Tips!

  • You can also use parchment paper to create a barrier while you decide your perfect placement. Once you find it, slide the paper out and press down.

  • If parts of your decal do not want to transfer, lay it face down and press it down  from behind, sometimes the added pressure releases it from the paper backing.

See? How simple and easy the process is if you thoroughly follow the instructions! Now, get started and make your first vinyl decal. Let me know how it turned out!

where to sell your crafts online

Where to sell your crafts online?

Have a Crafts Business? Find out Where to Sell Your Crafts Online?

In my opinion, nothing is cooler than owning a craft business! It’s definitely a skill not everyone possesses and your crafts are a product of your creativity and hard work. I have always been the one to encourage small businesses and appreciate the true art which is why I know there are many talented people out there who have literally zero ideas how valuable their crafts are. So today we’re gonna talk about where to sell your crafts online and make some good money out of it!

How to Sell Homemade Crafts Online?

The following are some authentic platforms where the chances of getting scammed are close to zero. Explore your options by going through this list below.

ETSY

My own experience with Etsy has me believing that Etsy is one of the best handmade craft websites. Why? Because the creators of this website have designed it especially for this purpose. It’s an e-commerce market place that exclusively deals with handmade and vintage. This means that the traffic on this website are people who know the value of your hard work so there are greater chances of you selling your crafts there!

In just the few years that I have sold on their platform, I have witnessed a lot of changes. While some of them seem to be a little weird, over all I genuinely believe that they have handmade sellers in mind. There is a lot of room for growth on their platform regardless of niche and it’s an excellent stepping stone if you plan on opening up your own website one day. The best part, it costs very little to start up and the Etsy community can be very helpful in understanding what to do next.

Amazon Handmade

Amazon handmade is a platform designed to support the work of local artists by giving them an opportunity to sell their handicrafts on the website. Like ETSY, you can only buy or sell handmade crafts from it but here’s what makes it a great option:

You know how we associate something with a brand name, we are quick to form our opinion about it like “Oh she’s carrying a Louis Vuitton handbag, it must be super expensive!” This is the type of credibility you need when you are selling handmade crafts online.

As soon as someone sees your products on Amazon Handmade they will believe if it’s on Amazon, it must be as great as shown in the picture! Even though knowing your way around Amazon may take some time but it’s totally worth it keeping in mind the vast client base!

Facebook

Facebook is the ideal place if you are looking to sell your handmade crafts casually and gain local support. There are hundreds of buying and selling groups on the platform through which you can market your products easily, without paying a single penny! Always remember to meet up in a public place and have cash and business cards ready.

Mobile Applications

The key to maximize your sales is to ensure you are selling to the right audience! You may be selling diamonds at the cheapest rates but if your audience is unaware of its worth, you can do all you can and still end up with zero sales by the end of the month. If your focus on who to sell is clear, the answer to where to sell your crafts becomes pretty clear!

Apart from ETSY and Amazon Handmade, one of your best shots at selling your crafts online is through mobile applications like Let Go, Offer Up, and PoshMark.

Local Markets

If online is not working out for you, you can always sell your art in the local markets. Flea and artisan markets might be one of your best options to sell your handmade crafts! You will often find your local markets hosting meet-ups every weekend or once a month.

So, today we have learned that the creativity you show in your free time is actually worth a lot of money. All you need is to showcase your product to the right audience and you will see the appreciation you get. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, isn’t that what they say?

Let me know your experiences if you have previously tried to sell on any of these platforms and what your favorite marketplace is for handmade items.

You can also add these great Decal Care Cards for your customers to help them learn how to apply vinyl decals and not ruin them!

ETSY Best seller badge tips by Ashley

ETSY Best seller badge; How to Get One?

ETSY Best Seller Badge: Top tips to get in the ETSY best seller listing

Being a freelancer, I follow several freelancing groups on social media. So just last night as I was scrolling through Facebook, I saw a post on one of these groups in which the person had asked about ETSY best seller badge. Going through my comments, made me realize how many people are unaware of what it actually means and how one can achieve it. I am guessing I don’t need a further introduction to this post so let’s just get right into it by addressing the most important part first.

But before we get into this, i’d like to address my new bestie’s who’re still wondering what is ETSY and how to setup a shop on etsy. So if you’re a complete beginner, don’t worry i’ve got your back. Check out my previous post to learn everything about etsy and starting your new business.

What does the ETSY Best Seller Badge Mean?

After reading the comments on the post and conducting short research of my own, I have come to a conclusion that a lot of people misunderstand the seller badge to be a representation of how well they are performing. Instead, this badge is only awarded to items that are sold the most in the least number of days.

For instance, if you sell handmade jewellery and you sold 10 pieces of a specific necklace within a day, you may be able to achieve the ETSY best seller badge. However, the minute someone sells 11 pieces of a similar necklace, your badge will instantly vanish and they will be the new owner of it!

Now that you have hopefully understood what the ETSY best seller badge means, let’s move on to understanding the ETSY best seller badge criteria. Knowing so might help you get one for yourself!

Tips on Gaining the Best Seller Badge on ETSY

Understandably so, selling a maximum number of pieces in a limited time frame is no piece of cake. It’s a combination of extreme hard work, research, and effort. Following are some tips that you should keep in mind when aiming to gain the best seller badge:

1.       Offer something with a unique touch.

2.       Ensure that you have a happy customer base.

3.       Ask your satisfied customers to leave a good review.

4.       Add attractive photos of the products.

5.       Focus on all your products otherwise the badge won’t last long!

ETSY's Rating Criteria

The evaluation of sellers on ETSY is done by counting on two key factors;

1.       The number of complaints against your shop

2.       The number of reviews that have less than 3 stars

If you’re wondering where to find more details on etsy seller badges and ratings. Head over to this link. You can read more about selling on ESTY with this seller handbook. Although there aren’t any precise instructions on how you can achieve the best seller. Therefore, instead of concentrating on earning the best seller badge, I would advise all the ETSY sellers out there to focus on maximizing your sales and keeping your customers happy. Because from what we have learned today, earning a best seller badge on ETSY is not an evidence of how well you perform so even if you are not a badge holder, you still are a star!
